Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was a sole child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In between two job opportunities, she studied secondary education. She wanted to be an high school English teacher. This dream however, was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as writing her own material. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. In Roots' performance she came out as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She became the first signed artist on label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
